Hi Pickleballers -
About a year ago, I bought a few different brands of pickleball safety glasses to see which ones I liked. I opened a pair, used them for about 30 seconds, and never opened any others or wore them again…until now.
I play with a lot of players who hit the ball hard. It’s never been an issue because I have good hand-eye coordination and keep my eye on the ball. That all changed last week. My partner and I were playing against two hard-hitting players at night, under the lights. The lighting isn’t great at night, but you adjust after a game or two.
The game was close and aggressive. We were up at the net with only a few points left, and my partner hit a counter a little too high. My opponent, who was facing me, returned the shot with everything he had and hit me just below the eye.
If you’ve ever been hit in the face with a pickleball from 14 feet away, it’s an eye-opening experience, so to speak. At first, I thought I would be blind for life, and then maybe just a concussion, and then just a broken and bloody nose, and then I realized I was fine.
For the first time, I realized the damage a pickleball can do. I don’t normally get concerned with safety precautions, but I now wear safety glasses 100% of the time. What are your thoughts on pickleball safety glasses? Take the poll below and let me know.
