Hi Pickleballers -
One of my first jobs out of college was selling term life insurance over the phone. Every conversation started with a bunch of questions, including asking how much the prospect weighed. Initially, it was awkward, but I quickly got used to it after asking a ton of people every day.
20 years later, I’ve found myself asking people about their weight again. But now it’s unsolicited and on the pickleball court. This time, I’m asking about pickleball paddle weight. I never thought about the paddle’s weight when I started playing pickleball. I didn’t even know how much it weighed. But that’s changed over the years.
I recently weighed one of my first paddles, an Onix Z5 (not recommended), which came in at 7.4 oz. My next few paddles (CRBN, Ronbus, Spartus) we’re all in the 7.8-8.0 range. These were all an upgrade from the Onix, but still didn’t feel quite right.
My game significantly improved when I switched to my current paddle, an 8.6 oz Legacy Pro (use code SIMPLYPB). I initially thought it was the paddle, which is likely the case. However, I’m starting to wonder if the extra weight is helping my game.
I started thinking back to when Wayne Dollard mentioned the benefits of a heavy paddle on The Simply Pickleball Podcast. Since then, several other pros have mentioned the benefits of a heavy paddle in upcoming episodes.
Benefits of a heavier pickleball paddle:
More power
A larger sweet spot
Increased stability
Better control
Many pros, both male and female, have paddles that weigh over 9 oz. Since I’m currently at 8.6 oz, I will add MORE weight. I want to see how a 9+ oz paddle will feel. I’ll let you know how it goes in next week’s newsletter.
Adding weight to your paddle is simple, but basic tools and instructions are needed. In a recent blog, I wrote a step-by-step guide for adding weight to thicker paddles with edge guards and thinner ones without. Check it out and let me know what you think.
This Week’s Simply Pickleball Podcast
Since we’re talking about the benefits of a heavy paddle, now is a good time to announce our latest podcast and a brand-new pickleball paddle company. Brenden Dollard is a top pickleball instructor and the son of two pickleball pros. He's combined the best parts of every paddle he's ever played and created Trnity Pickleball. Watch our interview to discover why a heavier 19mm pickleball paddle could change your game!

New Blog: Pickleball Hoodies!
I’ll throw a sports coat over a hoodie and go to a formal dinner. That’s how much I like hoodies! It shouldn’t be surprising that I almost always wear a hoodie when I play pickleball (I wore one today). With colder weather on the way, now is a great time to get a nice new pickleball hoodie.
